Dear Highwood Families,
We want to update you on the status of our space plans and let you know about some recent changes at Highwood and plans for this coming season.
First, we want to thank all of you for your patience, support, and dedication over the past few months. For those of you who don't know, Highwood was forced to move from our Silver Spring Avenue location at the end of April with just three weeks' notice, due to the building's inability to obtain permits necessary for our continued expansion. We have spent much of the past few months working with our incredible commercial real estate firm to secure Highwood's next home, while working out of our temporary space on Spring Street. This is a process that normally takes over a year for the size and type of space that Highwood needs. We have been working around the clock to secure the space and want to let you know that we are making substantial progress toward finalizing our next home. The space has been selected, and we are deep in planning with our architects, contractors, commercial lawyers, and real estate agents to figure out how all of our needs can be met. As you can imagine, we have not wanted to release further details about the space until everything is finalized and it's a certainty. And, we are working hard to make that happen as soon as we can.
Because we do not yet know the exact date our new space will be available, we have determined that we need to adapt some of the programming plans we had announced in early August for our next season. Until we finalize our next space, we will not be releasing final dates for our student productions and tech program. We expect to finalize the new space situation in September. The moment we have confirmation, we will release information about the student production and tech crew dates.
In the meantime, we will be offering the following, regular programming, including:
Summer Families will be receiving Health and Carpool Forms this week for all camp sessions. Please make sure you fill out one form per child attending camp!
All camp pick-up and drop-off will occur at our temporary offices and classrooms at 1400 Spring Street. Your Camp Handbook will contain more detailed information about picking up/dropping off by foot or by car.
Families will receive the Camp Handbook one week before the start of your session.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
We are excited to announce that while Highwood's Open Source Studio location in Silver Spring is in progress, performances for Macbeth and Footloose will be held at United Therapeutics at 1000 Spring Street in downtown Silver Spring.
This space is right on the corner of Colesville Road and Spring Street in the brand new Unisphere. There are several County parking garages within walking distance, and the space is fully handicap accessible.
Dear Highwood Families,
We have officially moved, and we are excited to welcome students (beginning tonight) to our temporary office and classroom space!
Any further changes to scheduling of rehearsals and classes, which is still possible as we get used to our new space, will be sent to the families enrolled in that class or production.
Please find an updated pick-up map below if you plan to pick up your students by car. This pick-up procedures will apply to anyone picking up after 7:00 PM if you are staying in your car! If you plan to get out of your car when picking up, you must park in a legal parking spot on the street or in the County parking garage (not in the building's parking lot).
Dear Highwood Families,
Below, please find information about Highwood's temporary office and classroom space. Beginning on Wednesday, May 1, all Highwood classes and rehearsals will meet at this location unless otherwise specified.
Highwood's staff and some classes/private lessons will be based out of these offices for the next several months while our new, second location is being built out. In the coming weeks, show rehearsals and performances will move to our new Open Source Studio location in downtown Silver Spring. We'll be sharing more information about that space soon.
Highwood's Temporary Offices and Classrooms
Location: 1400 Spring Street, Suite 350, Silver Spring, MD 20910
What's Here: Until further notice, all Highwood classes and rehearsals will meet at this location. This building provides gorgeous offices, space for our costume/props departments, private lessons, home school programs, design and tech classes, and small group rehearsals. The building is completely handicap accessible and is a close walk from the metro, bus stops, and across the street from Woodside Park.
Parking: If you need to park, your closest bet is the ample street parking on Spring Street. The building is also a 1 block walk from Montgomery County's Cameron Street Parking Garage.
Drop-Off: When dropping off your child at our temporary offices/classroom space, please drop them off on the side of the building on 1st Avenue. Do not block or stop on Spring Street! For the next few weeks, Highwood will post a staff member in front of the building 30 minutes before every class/rehearsal. That staff member will remain in front of the building until 15 minutes into the class/rehearsal (or until every student has arrived). If you are arriving outside of this window, enter the building through the main entrance, take the elevator to floor 3, exit the elevator to your right, and turn right down the hallway. You'll then find the glass door for Highwood's offices (Suite 350).
Pick-Up: When you come to pick up your child, you may wait on 1st Avenue, or pull into one of the two non-ATM lanes of the driveway for the Bank of America ATM. Do not block or stop on Spring Street! Students will exit exit the building together following rehearsals/classes with a Highwood Staff member.
If You Encounter Any Issues: Call us at 301-587-0697. We will have extra staff around for the first few weeks of classes/rehearsals as we transition to this temporary space, and as we move into all of our new locations, so there will always be someone to answer your phone calls if you encounter any issues dropping off.
Dear Highwood Families,
As many of you know, for the past year, Highwood has been working on solutions to continue our growth in our current building. First of all, we want to thank you for your patience, support, and dedication this season.
We are now able to announce, with tremendous excitement, that Highwood is moving from its current space at 914 Silver Spring Avenue at the end of April. We will, first, be moving to a new location in downtown Silver Spring, with plans to open a second, larger location later this year.
Highwood's programs have grown tremendously in the past 6 years - serving over 500 students in downtown Silver Spring, and over 5,000 in dozens of local schools. Our strategic plan calls for exciting growth both in our community programming and our theatre training programs and productions. And, we are so excited to share these plans with you in the coming months.
Our new Silver Spring home will host all of our upcoming programs - including our popular Art Squared summer camp and Theatre Intensives, serving over 200 campers alone, and all of our regular programming.
After this summer, the space will become our Open Source Studio - a concept that has been developed and refined at Highwood over the past six years. That space will be a community arts space - an incubator for Highwood programs and a home for many of our community-based productions (such as our Open Source Theatre Project, Improv Comedy Nights, student-directed shows, and more). The space will also be open for community use, to help us welcome as many people into theatre and the arts as possible. Silver Spring has been our home for the past six years and been instrumental in our growth, and we are so excited that our next phase will have a major presence in Silver Spring, serving even more members of our community.
We are also in negotiations for a second, much larger space that will allow us to expand in the ways our strategic plan envisions. We appreciate your patience as we work on the final details for this exciting phase in our growth, and look forward to sharing more details with you in the coming months.
This is an exciting time for all of us in the Highwood community. For families enrolled in current programs, we will also be sharing new location/drop-off and pick-up procedures with you on Sunday, April 28. All programs will meet in our current building through Tuesday, April 30.
Thank you as always for your support, and we look forward to seeing you around Highwood soon!
